The Quiet Corner pub (Areatza-Villaro, Biscay): a basque-irish experience

The Quiet Corner, the project and the place

The project

As the managers of the pub explain: «The Quiet Corner» is a project of a Basque-Irish experience in a small town, Areatza-Villaro, portal of the Gorbea Natural Park. It is the realization of a dream of brotherhood between the Basque Country and Ireland with whom we are united around common values. It is an initiative to share the Irish and Basque cultures and major social events. Share, collaborate, know each other, exchange experiences … And all within the philosophy of sustainable development in key of genuine and lasting progress. Our motto is: «Good beer, good music and  good friends».

The location

The pub is situated in Areatza (in Basque and officially; in Spanish, Villaro), a little town and municipality located in the province of Biscay, in the autonomous community of Basque Country, northern Spain. Villaro was founded in 1338 by Juan Núñez III de Lara, lord consort of Biscay. With the name Villa de Haro (later contracted in Villaro) Juan Núñez aims to honour the Haro family, branch to which was belonging his wife, María Díaz de Haro. This branch had been holder of the Lordship of Biscay for several centuries.
The Quiet Corner is located in the old quarter of the town of Aretza-Villaro, on the ground floor of an old building. A central and strategic location. Since its opening ten years ago, the pub managers Josu and Felix Basozabal, assisted by a small but dynamic staff, have organized more than 200 concerts (folk, blues, rock, jazz and Basque traditional music).

Sweet Winds and the pub The Quiet Corner

Even before acting as Lilofee or as duo Sweet Winds, both members already have been invited to sing in 2014 on the occasion of the German Oktoberfest. In this case, Ingrid K. was accompanied by the guitarist Raphaël Parejo. In september 2020, the duo has newly performed in The Quiet Corner with the female singer Zilan on the occasion of  the Molly Malone Festa organized by the managers of the pub (see here). And more recently Sweet Winds had performed a full concert online in collaboration with The Quiet Corner. The program was also officially presented in the pub.
